Tips For Starting A Garden
When you were a child you probably played in the dirt as often as you could. You dug up the earth, created castles, and drove toy cars on the small dirt roads. As a child, being allowed to play in the yard may have allowed you to have a grand imagination where you dreamed of adventures in other worlds. As an adult, time is limited for playing in the dirt. That's why so many adults put the extra hours in to grow their garden. As gardeners, you have an excuse to play and work in the dirt however often or little you like! If you have been thinking about planting your own garden and want it to thrive, here are some things you should do. Look at your current space with a critical eye. If you don't have very much space outdoors for gardening you are just going to have to settle for an indoor garden and the plants that you can grow inside until you find some place that is better for outdoor gardening. If your home has yard space you will have to decide how much of that space should be dedicated to your garden. How much space you have available will help you decide which plants you can grow and how expansive your garden will be. A garden grown indoors, for example, probably won't be a good place for growing vine plants, vegetables or fruits.
Loosen up your garden's soil by digging into the ground before you start planting. If you start digging before the conditions are right you could mess up your garden.
You want to dig when your soil is moist. To judge the conditions of your soil form a ball with the soil you've dug up--if it sticks together in your hand conditions are good. It should be dry enough that, when you drop the ball back onto the ground, it breaks apart. Your best tool for this job is a spade or a spading fork that you can use to turn the soil and get the air moving through it.
If you have never experienced planting your own garden you might want to start out with more than just a packet of seeds and some dirt. You might be more successful in gardening if you buy some plants that are already sprouting. This way your main job in your garden will be maintenance as you get your garden to grow. Whether or not the plants will grow won't be as much of a worry. You only have to worry about how to keep them alive. Next year, after you have gained some experience you may want to try your luck with seedlings. Another reason to start with sprouted plants is this: some plants grow every year whether or not you have planted new seeds-the bulbs simply stay dormant until the next blooming season!
