Question about braces????

I went to the dentist today to get my wires changed and braces tightened. They put steel ties on some of my bottom teeth. Could someone please tell me what those are for??? They hurt like crazy. I hurts to bite a french fry.
Instead of putting a rubberband on a bracket, they put a steel tie on it. I just wonder what thats all about.

steel ties? when my dentist put spacers [ little rubber bands ] in between some of my teeth they would just fall out cause my teeth were so close together. So they put this metal ties in between some of my teeth, basically it spacers out your teeth to put those things around your molars, or maybe you have an impacted tooth. Im not sure if my answer is the one your looking for though.
