Will painting the hood of a car flat black help the engine temperature stay down?
I read somewhere that the reason rally cars sometimes have flat black hoods is:
1) It reduces glare
2) It dissipates heat
Is it true that a hood painted flat black (not glossy) will dissipate the engine heat better and keep the engine cooler than a glossy painted hood?
The flat black paint does reduce glare and that is why racers use it. As far as dissipating heat better, there is a very slight advantage as the roughness of the matte finish (which is minor) makes a larger surface area than a smooth (glossy) finish does.
Unfortunately, flat black also absorbs heat more than glossy black does, which is why the light doesn't reflect into the driver's face, it's being absorbed by the paint. So, the flat black hood gets hotter to begin with. Unless you only drive at night, that defeats the purpose of trying to dissipate the engine heat faster.
